Why Polysiloxane Resin Offers Superior Weather Resistance
As infrastructure projects demand longer service life and lower maintenance costs, polysiloxane resin has become one of the preferred binder technologies for high-performance industrial protective coatings.
Thanks to its unique molecular structure, polysiloxane resin provides outstanding weather resistance, UV stability, gloss retention, and corrosion protection.
What Is Weather Resistance?
Weather resistance refers to a coating's ability to maintain its appearance and protective performance after long-term exposure to outdoor environments.
A weather-resistant coating should withstand:
· Ultraviolet (UV) radiation
· Rain and moisture
· Heat and humidity
· Oxygen and atmospheric oxidation
· Temperature fluctuations
· Salt spray and harsh industrial environments
Excellent weather resistance helps coatings retain their gloss, color, and film integrity while extending maintenance intervals and reducing life-cycle costs.

Why Does Polysiloxane Resin Perform Better?
The exceptional weatherability of polysiloxane resin originates from its unique Si–O–Si (siloxane) backbone.
Unlike conventional organic resins that primarily rely on carbon-carbon (C–C) bonds, polysiloxane resin is built upon siloxane bonds with significantly higher bond energy and superior chemical stability.
This molecular structure offers excellent resistance to UV degradation, thermal oxidation, and environmental aging, allowing coatings to maintain their mechanical properties and appearance for many years.
In addition, polysiloxane resin forms a highly crosslinked coating network that effectively reduces the penetration of moisture, oxygen, and corrosive media, providing long-term corrosion protection in aggressive service environments.

Typical Applications of High Solid and Solvent-free System Polysiloxane Coatings
With superior weathering & anti-corrosion performance, Quark Durle® polysiloxane resins is widely used for benchmark projects across key heavy-industry sectors including petrochemical facilities, steel bridge structures, LNG energy installations and water conservancy infrastructure, with stable product performance fully verified under actual service conditions.
Heavy-Duty Anti-Corrosion for Coastal Pipelines & Steel Structures
Severe coastal salt-spray corrosion adopts polysiloxane topcoat, featuring high humidity and concentrated chloride ions. Thanks to its low-VOCs formulation and non-hazardous classification, the product complies with on-site environmental construction regulations and delivers long-term resistance against salt-spray corrosion after application.
Anti-Corrosion for Offshore Flare Stacks & Pipe Racks
Operating within highly corrosive offshore chemical parks subject to combined high-temperature and salt-spray attack, polysiloxane system coatings deliver reliable thermal resistance and chemical resistance to meet stringent service requirements of LNG facilities. Meanwhile, its low-VOC formulation satisfies the environmental control specifications.
Protection for Water Conservancy Facilities & Steel Structures
Exposed to open-air water-affected service conditions, coatings are required to withstand rainwater immersion, UV-induced discoloration and surface soiling. Coatings formulated with Durle® resins feature outstanding weatherability, anti-discoloration performance and excellent stain resistance for easy cleaning, keeping the coating film intact during years of outdoor service.
Do you have experience of applying polysiloxane resins in aerospace
Yes, our customers have some similar applications. Due to the high-temperature resistance and insulation properties, polysiloxane resin could be the ideal material for aerospace fileds. The recommended option is pure siloxanes(eg. SH-1 series).
For primer-topcoat-in-one coatings system one coat film thickness of 30-40µm, what is the salt spray resistance?
Such thin films in primer-topcoat-in-one system are not recommended for anticorrosion application. To share the data from our customer: for primer-topcoat-in-one coatings, on condition of 95% application solid, roller-applied one coat at 80-100µm film thickness, spreading rate 80-100µm, the salt spray resistance is around 800-1000 hours.
How long is the scribed salt spray resistance for polysiloxane coatings with film thickness of 60-80µm
It’s around 1000 hours, with blistering at the scribe, spread area is less than 2 mm.
